Southwest United States Vacations – How To Get Ready

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

These are some preparation tips-suggestions to get the most from your Southwest America Culinary vacation.

Have a Large Appetite
The perfect way to do justice to any culinary tour is to have a big appetite. What’s the point of paying for the chance to taste the best culinary delights of a specific area or culture when your stomach can’t accommodate more than one bite?

Of course, having a big appetite doesn’t mean starving yourself the day before.

Just make sure you don’t eat too much the day before your tour. If possible, take a pill to ensure your stomach’s certifiably empty for the food fest ahead.

Prepare for the Heat
Heat is a word often associated with the Southwest in more ways than one.

Firstly, a majority of the dishes of Southwest food are especially spicy. Chimichangas, nachos, taquitos, stuffed peppers, chile relleno, chili con carne, and salsa are just a few of the well-known dishes that can get you hopping mad out of the restaurant with burning taste buds. If you’re not accustomed at eating spicy foods, make sure you have a small bottle or jug of iced water with you at all times; there will be times when you just can’t wait a minute longer to cool your mouth off.

Secondly, Southwestern states are not particularly the coolest regions of the country. The climate in this area, especially in Arizona and Texas, can be quite stifling in its heat. You can’t beat Arizona travel. But be sure you’re dressed comfortably in cool, comfortable clothing. Wearing a cap or sun visor as well as a pair of shades can help protect you from the heat.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are always a possibility, so again, having an ample supply of water with you at all times is necessary.

Prepare for the Heat
Concerning the heat, there are also certain aspects of the weather that you might have to watch out for. Insects are a nominal but annyoing problem, but one that a mosquito repellent can easily cure. Rainfall can also be a cause of trouble, but not if you come
ready with a raincoat and umbrella.

Clothing
While we’re on the subject of clothing, be sure to ask your vacation planner if you’ll visit any locations with a requisite dress code. Knowing what to dress can also help ensure that you pack light for your Southwest US tour.

Bring a First Aid Kit with You
Vacation planners always have first aid kits with them, but there’s no knowing when you’ll find yourself lost and separated from your group. Thus, it would do you no harm to have your own first aid kit with you.

Now, if you’ve considerable experience traveling, you probably already have a first aid kit packed with your bags. There are, however, extra things you might add to your kit in consideration of “special dangers” you might encounter during your Southwest US tour.

If your trip includes a trip to the desert, antidotes for snake bites and medication for other types of bites (remember: scorpions and spiders can cause harm, too!). High altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is also a possibility if your culinary tour includes a short but physical mountain hike.

Double Check Everything
Last, review your travel checklist a few days before you leave for your trip. Call your tour planner to ensure that everything’s ready in their side as well.

Need Help About Holidays - Read Free Materials About Cruise Ship Deals

Your Luxury cruise - Cruises Deals

Cruise ships are not commonly thought of as family vacation vessels. However, there are a fair amount of cruises, like Carnival’s “fun ships” targeted at fulfilling just this purpose. You know the kids are not going that far, unless of course they have gone overboard. Also, there is a little bit of something for everyone in all age groups. From adults, to teens, to kids, there is are coordinated activities as well as focused facilities for all of the different age groups.

Choosing cruise ship deals wisely.

For parents there are the usual activities. Your rest, relaxation and rejuvenation is certainly the focus and you can spend all the time you’d like lounging by the pool or on the deck, as well as making appointments for a massage or facial. There are also great opportunities for socializing and networking, and it is a good idea to have either a small notebook on hand, or at least copies of your card to give to new friends and contacts. There are also wine tasting groups, exercise rooms and nightclubs are on the adults only agendas for most family cruises.

For kids, there are all kinds of activities on board family cruises. From special times in the pool, to special gym classes, the kids are at least seemingly the focus on a family cruise. There are also children’s centers focused on entertaining the kids and keeping them busy while the adults enjoy their alone time. There are craft activities and fully certified staff to work with your most precious commodities: your kids.

If you have older kids, there are also teen centers on board some cruise ships. This is becoming a more and more popular trend. In fact Coca-Cola recently teamed up with the Carnival cruise line to bring exciting new teen centers to their fun ships. These teen centers have been created out of extensive market research and include dance floors, jukebox listening stations, a mock bar with non-alcoholic specialty drinks and space for the teens to just hang out. This is a revolutionary concept, since teens are a previously untapped market in terms of cruise line focus marketing. Teens are also more likely to find things that they enjoy in the ports of call than will younger kids.

One reason that cruises are a great idea for family vacations is that most of the costs are included in the base price of the trip. While you are on the ship, things like meals and activities are for the most part covered. This is great because you do not have to give per diems to your kids and you can know up front how much your vacation is going to cost. Of course, you will want to have extra money on hand for when you leave the ship and get to do some real travel.

Ready for a cruise? Then read these vacation packing checklist tips.

Fish Classifications For Ideal Fly Fishing Off Alaskan Waterways

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Recreation and Sports
No Comments

If you’re thinking of fishing in Alaska, you should recognize the fish species in the area, understand their preferred flies and know what to expect. So, read on for a general overview of the fish species during your next fishing vacation in Alaska.

Pacific Salmon

There are four major species of Pacific salmon in Alaska: Chinook salmon (also known as king salmon), pink salmon, silver salmon and sockeye salmon or reds. They’re a great game fish, but usually less popular with cold water fly fishers than, say, trout or Arctic char.

It’s important to note that while Pacific salmon won’t eat after returning to fresh waters, they will still strike subsurface and surface flies. However, fly fishers need to be ready to take in what are a large and aggressive fish species. The king salmon in Alaska can weigh close to or over one hundred pounds.

Steelhead Trout

The steelhead trout is a unique rainbow trout that can swim in the open sea or large lake environment, but does spawn in connecting rivers. After their spawning, they’ll return to a large lake or ocean.

Because the steelhead is rare, fast and hard to catch, it’s a prized fish and a respected catch. On average, the steelhead will weigh between 4 and 12 pounds, but can go much larger in size in the Alaskan waters. To catch the steelhead, fly fishers need to be patient and persevere.

The Grayling (Trout Family)

The graying is a unique fish, easily identifiable by its high and broad dorsal fin and almost neon blue color on its body and fins. For fly fishing, Alaska graylings are both prized and easy to catch. The fish aren’t very discriminating and tend to go for almost any fly.

That said, Alaska graylings do have a few preferences. They tend to like active, moving insects, smaller insects and also dry flies. The fish will also feed on minnows and crustaceans, though traditional light flies seem to be the most effective.

An Alaskan grayling will typically grow to about 4 pounds, but they’re a tasty catch and well suited to the dinner table.

Alaskan Arctic Char

The Arctic char is a member of the trout family that prefers clean, clear and cold lakes or streams to survive. They are strong, active and aggressive, but also a fantastic catch. They predominantly feed on insects, minnows, aquatic worms, fish eggs and crustaceans. Most fly fishers agree that the Arctic char is generally more gullible than its trout cousins. For fly fishing, Alaska arctic char are plentiful and easy on any fishing trip.

Summer Vacation Spots

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Travel and Leisure
No Comments

The words “Schools Out For Summer” strike joy into the hearts of children and often a sigh of relief for parents who are just as eager to take a break from homework as their progeny. However taking a complete break from the books for the entire summer can be problematic.

Studies have shown that children forget between 1 and 3 months of school during the summer vacation spots. While reading is the least effected, the most impacted subjects are spelling and math. Obviously it is important for children to have time to play and relax — to just enjoy being kids during the summer. Children should not be pushed into a high-pressure study schedule over summer vacation. But parents can take steps to slow down that loss of knowledge and erosion of skills.

First and foremost, keep children reading over the summer vacation spots but try to work in some nonfiction as well as fiction onto the reading list. Take a lesson from many experienced teachers and pick a few spelling words from the books children are reading. Perhaps tie test results into some special summer reward and you will have eagerly awaited spelling bees.

Writing is one skill that often erodes during summer vacation spots, but you can give children a writing journal and a weekly goal. They can write about whatever you think will interest your child. They can report on their baseball games, make up elaborate games, or simply report on the books they are reading. There are lots of great writing prompts out there for kids if you run dry of ideas. It does not matter so much what your child writes so long as they spend time writing so they can work on handwriting skills as well as keep in the groove of putting words on paper. One easy writing prompt is to have the child describe people, places, objects, pets and other animals, insects, and games. Lists are another easy writing prompt — favorite things, worst things, etc. Then on another day you can use those descriptions and lists to generate another writing prompt.

Math skills might seem the hardest thing to work on during summer but in fact these can be the easiest. Math does not have to come out of a book and you can easily work a lot of math lessons into those long car rides or plane trips as you go on a family vacation. Try counting car headlights (counting by 2s) as you drive or fingers in a restaurant or plane (counting by 5s). Find various shapes around the house and then trace them to create yet more complex forms. Get the kids involved in cooking and learning about measurements. Give the kids a ruler and notebook and tell them to measure various objects around the house. Empty out your pocket change and have the kids sort it and create word problems with the coins.

There are lots of activities you can do at home without the expense of special tools, workbooks or programs that will actively engage your child in learning and help keep their school skills sharp. They will not even notice they are learning because they will enjoy these projects so much.

Organize A Fulfilling Golf Excursion For The Family

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Travel and Leisure
No Comments

Typically, golf vacations are for seasoned golfers who want to try their hand at new and challenging golf courses around the world. However, as the golf sector grows, the market is growing as well to include vacations geared toward golf training and family golf vacations.

To learn about fun ways to plan a great family golf vacation, keep reading.

1. Choose a golf resort that’s family friendly.

If you’re planning to bring your family along on your next golf vacation, choose a resort that seems family friendly. Look for alternate activities like tennis, swimming, spas and recreation areas so that family members who don’t feel like golfing have other optional activities to do while you’re all out on the green. Or for those who do enjoy the sport, you can look around to purchase appealing golf-related gifts.

2. Investigate training and school possibilities.

A lot of new golf resorts are starting to offer golf boot camps geared toward all levels and ages of players. If your little ones are just learning the sport or you’re trying to improve your skill, this can be a great option. Some resorts offer junior training camps and a separate course for the adults to enjoy while their kids are at golf school.

Another fun and cost-effective idea for families is to hire one professional instructor to work with the entire family over the course of a day or a week. Your instructor can evaluate your skill levels, work with you through a game, and you can spend your vacation learning the game together.

3. Try renting junior gear for the kids.

If your children are still growing, you might want to look into renting, borrowing, or buying used gear. Junior clubs come in a variety of sizes. Before you shell out the money for a brand new set that will be too small by next year, you may want to look into less expensive options.

4. Pack lots of sunscreen and water.

Kids are durable, but before you set off on a long day of walking the course with them, make sure you’ve packed lots of extra sunscreen, bottled water and a hat. Heat stroke and burns happen often on the golf course, so be prepared.

5. Leave early for your tee times.

Parents know that kids can take forever to get ready, so if you’re typically at the course 30 minutes ahead of your tee time, aim to be there an hour in advance if you’ve got the kids in tow.

6. Spread the wisdom.

Use this opportunity to impart on your children the importance of good golf etiquette and strong sportsmanship.

Best Beaches In Maui, Hawaii

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Travel and Leisure
No Comments

Maui, Hawaii is like one fantastic beach. Unsurpassed for swimming, skin diving, surfing and beach combing, Maui is still the top choice for people who are fascinated with the beauty of the sea. In Maui, the sea may look calm, but it can be treacherous, especially to those who are careless.

The Kapalua beach is considered as one of the safest areas for swimming. Its waters are calm, and the shoreline has a scattering of coral reefs and rocky peninsulas. When in season, whales can be spotted from the beach and is one of the main attractions in Maui.

The Napili Bay Beach is a favorite among sun bathers with its palm fringed beach of white sand. During summer, the area is a perfect site for snorkeling and swimming and is a favorite among surfers during the winter months. The view of Molokai is magnificent all year round.

Right off the 16th hole of the Kapalua Golf Club is D.T. Fleming Beach Park. This is a great area for sunbathing but inexperienced swimmers should not venture out to the sea as the current can be strong but lifeguards are posted at the beach during the day.

Expert windsurfers love Maalaea Beach, courtesy of the natural wind tunnel’s powerful “freight train rights”. Non-experts best not surf here because the winds are pretty strong and taking control of your sails can be difficult.

A travel to Maui is best experienced with a group. As such, you best reserve one of the many vacation homes in the area.

Cruise Travel: Considerations To Plan For Travel On The Cruise Line

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Travel and Leisure
No Comments

Cruise ships are a fun and engaging way to see numerous ports of call, enjoy a variety of activities and travel through beautiful regions. Cruise ship travel is, by nature, markedly different from any other form of vacation. So, you need to plan accordingly.

From packing to medical considerations, preparing for a cruise vacation goes beyond the basics of swim trunks and guide books. To learn about how best to prepare for a cruise vacation, keep reading for great tips on everything from packing your suitcase to warding off seasickness.

What to Pack on a Cruise Vacation

Ultimately, what you pack is going to depend on your cruise destination. An Alaskan cruise will require different clothing than a Caribbean cruise at the height of summer. That said, don’t let land temperatures fool you.

Particularly during the winter months, some cruises (like those leaving from L.A.) can be quite cold. Regardless of the forecasts on land, always pack a wind-resistant jacket and at least one set of clothes that will allow you comfort up on deck when things get chilly out at sea.

You’ll also need proper identification and proof of purchase to board a cruise ship. These will be required at every port-of-call, so pack your papers (including your health insurance) in a water-resistant envelope that’s small enough to carry with you if you plan to leave the ship.

Medical Considerations

You will most likely need travel health insurance for your next cruise vacation. When purchasing travel insurance, try to find one that’s geared specifically toward cruises and the legal intricacies of international waters.

Secondly, pack any needed medications. You may even want to pack extras or a spare if you intend to go to shore. For example, an asthmatic may want to pack one inhaler to carry in a pocket and another backup inhaler just in case.

Most cruise ships have a medical clinic and doctor or health professional on-board the ship, but this is typically a stopgap measure, not a full-proof backup.

Finally, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you can prepare for your voyage with basic ginger root. An herbal remedy, ginger root has been proven to help with seasickness while avoiding the side effects common with many pharmaceutical motion sickness remedies. Herbalists recommend taking the ginger root starting a few weeks before you actually leave on your cruise.

What You Should Leave Behind

Always leave behind a full travel itinerary and emergency contact information with family and friends. Most cruise lines offer an emergency number that can be used by family and friends in case they need to get in touch with you urgently.

Don’t Travel Anywhere Without These Photography Tips

Posted by Luxury Vacation Central Blog under Travel and Leisure
No Comments

Whether you’re embarking on a ocean vacation or a family reunion , it’s going to be a time to remember we’ve taken, we tend to remember them best with photographs. Here’s some ideas to enhance your trip as well as your memories of them.

LOCATION PREPARATION

Since you know where you’re going (that’s a minimum requirement), doesn’t it make sense to check out the location before you get there? Create a list of attractions, accommodations, special points of interest, amusement areas, shopping, etc. A good source to help you do this is the “Places and Travel section” of msn.com.

Next, figure out the photo opportunities for each appropriate venue. Anyone can take a “that’s nice” picture of the kids at an amusement park. But wouldn’t you rather capture a WOW masterpiece that could be hung over the mantle?

Whether you’re going on a family gathering or a mountain vacation, check out the books written about the destination and highlight the best photo opportunities BEFORE YOU GET THERE.

If you’re taking a skiing vacation to a more remote area, scout out the national parks in the area. The great thing about national parks is that the scenery is so breathtaking, that a so-so shot looks outstanding… just because of the location. Once in www.nps.gov, Do an Internet search for possible photos at the National Park Service or simply do a Google search on the location. Phenomenal shots will present themselves all over the place!

PHOTOGRAPHY PREPARATION

Here’s a typical scenario… you’re up at the crack of dawn (OK, not realistic for many of us, including me, but go with me here) and you’re just pulling into the most scenic overlook for 400 miles as the sun is starting to break the horizon.

You instinctively stop the car, grab your camera and your tripod, and look for the optimum location to set up. There’s just one tiny little problem… You Didn’t Take Your Tripod on this family reunion . Rather than smack yourself on the forehead, why not plan for these things now, by constructing a list BEFORE you leave?

Your list should include AT LEAST the following:

Tripod
Do I need to repeat – BRING YOUR TRIPOD? It doesn’t take up much room, and it allows you to capture entirely new categories of pictures that wouldn’t be possible without one

Memory
Bring all the memory you have. But don’t stop there; also pack your portable storage devices if you have any.

Flash
If your camera has a hot shoe, bring your external flash, and any additional equipment that can be used to help with bounce flash. Also, don’t forget to use it during the daytime to make your images really jump off the page.

Shutter Release Cable
Remember your external shutter release cable for those long exposures. How else are you going to get that “angel-hair” look of the waterfalls without camera-shake ruining the image?

Remember the Basics
Don’t forget the basics like: batteries, battery charger, camera bag, and additional lenses and filters (if applicable on your camera).

User Manual
And just in case you need it, bring the manuals for your equipment. It’s only when you start to use things that you realize you forgot how!

Finally, don’t get so wrapped up in taking the perfect photo that you don’t enjoy the trip. And, remember to use the tripod so that you’ll be in at least some of the photos.
